Fortune-teller Maciej
Overview
Brief and objectives
Maciej, a fortune-teller known from popular TV programmes, asked us to create a new website that would reflect both his charismatic media image and the profound spiritual message he conveys to his clients. The key objective was to present his services – tarot, astrology and energy counselling – within an atmosphere of ‘heavenly’ mystery, stylistically reminiscent of fantasy worlds, whilst maintaining a structure clear enough for a wide audience of television viewers to easily navigate the range of consultations on offer and make a booking.
Each section was to have its own distinctive visual style, so that the user would feel like an explorer traversing successive zones of a mystical realm, yet without the impression of graphic chaos. The design challenge lay in reconciling media recognition, a highly illustrative, fantastical atmosphere, and legibility standards for a diverse audience. A problem was also highlighted regarding numerous cases of fraud involving scammers posing as fortune tellers.
Research and Design
Research and inspiration
The foundation for the graphic design solutions was laid by:
An in-depth analysis of Maciej the Fortune Teller’s media activities, a review of television and online content, and a review of articles and media reports. This step was intended to capture the media image built up over the years.
A content analysis of topics related to astrology and fortune-telling, their condensed history and methodology.
An audit of competing websites revealed that most of them suffer from an overload of graphics, unclear navigation or boring, chaotic layouts. The graphic design made navigation difficult.
I created a mood board using modern Tarot decks, illustrations from the world of fantasy and divination, and NASA photographs of nebulae and planets.
Gathering feedback online (Google, esoteric groups);
Further discussions with the Fortune Teller’s manager based on the information gathered – determining the direction of the project, creating style samples.
Graphic design
Colour palette: Bright, high-contrast, with a transition into a single dark section. The colour scheme is based on deep, dark purples and pinks with gold accents – a striking, cosmic combination. In the background, powdery, muted pinks evoke a ‘heavenly’ feel.
Typography: very large headlines with graphic initials combine decorative flair with legibility. A sans-serif font with a strong character.
In the background of the “Maciej” headline in the Hero section, a parallax effect with a fiery gold texture was used to convey the mystery of the practices employed.
Delicate “heavenly” motifs in the background, intertwining across the entire length of the page, facilitate the user’s immersion in the world of divination and astrology.
The use of delicate, linear graphics reminiscent of astrological illustrations. The use of vector graphics also allowed them to be utilised to create slow, hypnotic animations.
References to fortune-telling accessories and sections presenting specialisations and tarot cards depicting success.
Information Architecture and UX
The website as a key source for attracting clients for fortune-telling services. Prominent display of contact details: at the top of the homepage, within the content, and as a large button in the footer.
A clear structure of the homepage, achieved through distinct spacing between sections and simple, cropped images illustrating the various topics.
The decision to place information about scams in the central part of the homepage and additionally in the menu. This emphasises the importance of the issue and enables more users to access this information. It builds awareness
and increases security among clients.
The articles section on the homepage, in contrast to the light-coloured sections, has a dark background to separate this part from the content featuring the fortune-teller and the offer. By breaking up the light colour scheme, the reader’s attention is drawn back to the end.
Slow animations of linear drawings used in the background help keep the user’s attention on the page whilst browsing.
